How did you get into the real estate industry? I became interested in real estate after following the purchasing process when my parents bought our family home. I started right out of high school; in fact, I had to wait until I turned 19 years old to get my license! I loved the idea of working for myself and being my own boss.
What led you to become a managing broker? I always loved coaching and mentoring agents was something that fulfilled that passion. I appreciate having a leadership role and being able to help our agents grow and become successful.
What is one thing you wish you knew when you first got into real estate? Just one thing? There are so many lessons I’ve learned (and keep learning). If I have to pick one thing, it would be to become a real estate investor as early as you can. There is no better way to grow your personal wealth and become financially independent.
What is your advice to someone who wants to become an agent? It’s not as easy as it appears! This is a very challenging and competitive business, therefore before you begin your career make sure that you have enough savings to sustain your lifestyle for six months to a year. Ask yourself, are you an outgoing and social person? Can you work independently and be a self starter? How motivated are you? And can you see yourself working 24/7?
What is the best piece of advice you’ve received (related to the real estate industry)? Listen to your clients, we have two ears and one mouth for a reason! Buying and selling real estate is an emotional experience and, as they say, “the biggest financial investment most people will ever make” and with that comes pressure and stress. Therefore, as an agent, you have to have the market knowledge and be an expert, listen carefully to what your clients are saying, and show empathy when required. It’s a huge responsibility navigating the ever-changing real estate landscape and guiding clients.
Why do you enjoy working in the real estate industry? I appreciate working for myself, I like the challenges and independence that real estate offers me.
What is your favorite thing about working at Macdonald Realty? The culture! Macdonald Realty offers their agents support in all areas of real estate with integrity and class, with excellent leadership from a team of very experienced Managing Brokers. In real estate you “work for yourself” but not “by yourself” — not when you have Macdonald Realty there to support you!
What is a fun fact about yourself? I love 70’s music and playing my old vinyl records, or better yet my old reel-to-reel (do you know what that is?).
What is your favorite quote? “Don’t sweat the small stuff and it’s all small stuff.” Sometimes we need to take a breath and realize what’s appearing to be a huge problem or issue today can be overcome. A good example of this philosophy is to look back at something bad (not life threatening) that happened years ago and how it’s just a ‘blip’ now.
What is a book that everyone should read? The E-Myth Revisited by Michael Gerber. Every agent is an entrepreneur running a small business; this book provides you with insights in building a successful business.
